Even the Russians are now looking at getting involved in Iraq- that leaves Saddam totally surrounded, and without a friend (except for France, a few God-botherers, a few hippies and Al Gore), so basically alone and not very well armed.
I have thought for some time that the tactic is to continually apply pressure, build up the hard core military presence and generally make it look like Laughing Boy in the moustache is going to cash his chips- the choice being, does he go on his own, or have some company?
The Iraqi military is not exactly known for its’ fighting tenacity and courage under fire; gassing Kurds and strafing Marsh Arabs from Hind gunships is usually enough to get a citation from El Presidente’.
The presence of a large number of heavily armed professional troops, with a proven ability to croak large numbers of Iraqi soldiers without a great deal of effort, and a seemingly bottomless pile of ordinance to use on said Iraqi troops, is probably making thoughts stir in the basal ganglia of even the most ardent fan of Fearless Leader and the rest of the Ba’ath gang; perhaps even some members of the party are sharing those thoughts- if Laughing Boy has got to go, why the fuck should he take me with him?
I can see Hussain waking up one morning with an extra hole in his head which does not occur naturally, while his Cabinet furiously tries to negotiate, perhaps accompanied by a coup.
The peaceniks and assorted anti-war vegetables may well get their wish, withdrawal from the Gulf without a shot (well, maybe one) being fired, but it won’t be with Laughing Boy still in the chair in Baghdad, and it won’t have happened because of their efforts.

Shanghai is to host a round of the V8 Supercars next year. I’m sure it will be a highlight of the year for the Chinese, who no doubt will be fascinated by big boofy bevans driving round and round in Commodores and Falcons which the Chinese can’t buy.

Now if they were racing 200SXs with disco lights and huge doof systems, or Supras similarly equipped, the locals would be queuing up.
